YOUTUBE SENSATION: Jayesslee ♥ |
![]() Janice and Sonia Lee, also known as “Jayesslee,” are 24-year old twin sisters, born and raised in Sydney, Australia. Always having a creative flare, they explored the field of arts and design straight out of high school, but it did not take long for them to realise their greatest passion was in music. Janice and Sonia are inspired to sing and write about their personal experiences, or the stories of those who have impacted their lives. They aspire to be artists who send out a strong message of hope and freedom through their music. |

Janice and Sonia have fond memories of their childhood. When asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Their answers were a variation of a teacher, a painter and at one point in time even a shop-keeper. Funny though, never did they mention a musician or a performer as something they wanted to become. They had no idea what was headed their way.
In 2008 the duo discovered the world of YouTube. Fascinated by the concept of connecting with an unseen audience all over the world, they created their first account under the name “Jayesslee”. The name was their attempt to be clever - fusing both of their initials and spelling it out.
Jayesslee’s first video was uploaded in their messy bedroom, doubtful that anybody would take notice. However the subscribers steadily increased over a year and it wasn’t until 2009 when the two saw a sudden boost in followers after their viral hit cover of Tamia’s “Officially Missing You” (currently over 9 million hits).
In 2010 they packed their bags and flew to LA for the duo’s first ever debut concert. Since then, they have visited numerous parts of the world such as Singapore, Washington DC, Vancouver and Malaysia performing headlining shows and meeting their amazing fans. Janice and Sonia have made various television appearances throughout asia on popular programs such as “Day Day Up”, “E! News Asia” and “Quickie” in Malaysia. The two have had the opportunity of meeting and performing alongside some of their fellow YouTube addicts KevJumba, NigaHiga, Andrew Garcia, D-Pryde and Maribelle Anes on the Australian Boombox Tour and David Choi on his Asia Pacific tour. They also shared the stage with K-POP star Jay Park in Singapore at the HTC Likes Award.
People have often asked the two what it feels like to be online celebrities. They look at each other with raised eyebrows, wondering how anyone could refer to them as celebrities (chuckle). Rather the two feel like they have made many friends from all around the world and hope to meet every one of them one day.
Their ultimate goal and motivation behind every video is to share about the hope they have found in knowing Jesus. The two are not shy in expressing their faith and indicate they would not be doing what they do if it weren’t for His grace. All the glory to Him.
